הטיפול הפמניסטי צמח כחלק מתהליך התעוררות תנועת הנשים בשנות ה 70 -
בתגובה למערכת בריאות נפשית מסורתית שתרמה ליצירת סביבה לא צודקת ומזיקה
עבור נשים.

טיפול פמניסטי, שם לו כמטרה לזהות את האופן שבו הדומיננטיות הפטריארכלית
מופנמת ומגולמת בחיי המטפל, הפציינט, הקשר הטיפולי ומערך בריאות הנפש
בכללותו ומביא אספקטים אלה למרכז הדיון. הוא מתמקד בדרכים הלא-נראות
ולעיתים לא מודעות בהן פטריארכליות שזורה בחיי היום-יום של בני אדם
בהתפתחות הזהות, באופני הביטוי הרגשיים ובחוויה האישית של כח וחוסר כח. הוא
שואף להרחיב את ההבנה הפרטנית של מטפלים ביחס לפציינטים, תוך התבוננות על
מצוקה פסיכולוגית כמבטאת תהליכים המתרחשים בקונטקסט החברתי-תרבותי
הרחב יותר. בו בעת הוא דורש מהמטפל להתייחס לכל חווית חיים כחוויה ייחודית
ובעלת ערך וכמהווה מקור חשוב של ידע הן אודות האדם ברמה האישית והן אודות
החברה בכללותה. התבוננות זו על אופן יצירת המשמעות ברמה האינדוידואלית
ובמקביל על המציאות החברתית-תרבותית-פוליטית שמבנה משמעות זו, ממקמת את
הטיפול הפמניסטי ברמה התאורטית כתאוריה המגשרת בין הגישות הפוזיטיביסטיות
והפוסטמודרניות אודות טבע האדם מבלי שתהיה מזוהה עם אף אחת מהן ,(Brown
(1994
בניגוד למרבית הגישות הפסיכותרפיות, הטיפול הפמניסטי התפתח ללא "מנהיגים"
רשמיים או 'גורואים' (Brown & Brodsky1992,). למרות שתחום זה ידע "אמהות"
רבות כגון, 1983) Miriam Greenspan ,(1972) Phyllis Chesler) ו Hannah Lerman -
(1987), שהיו הראשונות לשאול את השאלות הקשות אודות סקסיזם בפסיכותרפיה,
לא ניתן למצוא דמות אחת דומיננטית בדומה לפרויד, יונג אליס או בק המזוהה
כמייסדת הגישה. העדר זה של דמות מייסדת משקפת את המחוייבות הפמניסטית
לביסוס ידע מהיסוד (מלמטה למעלה) ולא דרך הליכה אחר אוטוריטה מסויימת או
ידע המוכתב מלמעלה ע"י "מומחים".
